Jackie Chan opens 'dragon heart' café at Starhill Gallery

Jackie Chan & Tan Sri (Dr.) Francis Yeoh with the staff of Jackie Chan's Cafe

Kuala Lumpur, 28 October 2007

?

Starhill Gallery was filled with much excitement yesterday as throngs of people came hoping to catch a glimpse of the famed action hero Jackie Chan who was here to officially open the first Jackie Chan’s Cafe at the mall’s new Muse floor, also launched yesterday.

?

Jackie’s friend and fellow philanthropist, Tan Sri (Dr.) Francis Yeoh, YTL Corp group managing director was on hand for the launch and was delighted that the Muse floor would be a great place for family and friends to gather and enjoy coffee together while appreciating the art that is all around them.

?

The Jackie Chan Café is among the many life-changing endeavours of the Hong Kong superstar, which hopes to inspire and change the hearts of people all over the world.

?

The loaded agenda of the cafe is that it brings you more than just good coffee. It aims not to make money but rather to give away money and that speaks loudly of the heart of its owner. A percentage of revenue from Jackie Chan Café will be donated to charity to further his good works.

?

The cafe serves premium coffees, including espresso and blended coffees, juices and flavoured teas, as well as light meals and pastries. A personal favourite of Jackie’s is the Caffe Latte, a sure hot seller.

?

Earlier in the day, children gathered to take part in the “United Buddy Bears” colouring charity campaign. The series of teddy bear caricatures will be hung in the “Hall of Fame” at Jackie Chan’s Café and proceeds from the campaign will also be matched one-for-one by Jackie Chan and one-for-one by Starhill Gallery towards charity.

?

In a private interview, Jackie shared that his passion for helping underprivileged kids came about as he could relate to the struggles they face. Coming from a poor family himself, Jackie cherished the little things people did to provide for him and his turn of fate which lead him to superstardom elevated his chances of giving back to society whom had helped make him who he is today.

?

In applauding his good works, 5 Malaysian artists presented him with artworks reflecting the heart and style of the superstar. Abstract Expressionist Yusof Ghani presented Jackie with a personal painting entitled ‘Silat’ which is a vibrant piece depicting the Malaysian Martial Arts while Alex Ong presented a piece called ‘Glory’ from his wildflowers collection.

?

Philip Wong from ArtSeni felt compelled to share a piece entitled ‘Complement’ from his Daun Series which is about touch as he felt very moved by the charitable works of Jackie Chan while Tew Nai Tong presented a piece called ‘Bali Girls’.

?

The man with a big heart and warm personality indeed touched many hearts that day and Malaysians will indeed be able to share his charisma and contribute to the cause all in the comforts of Starhill Gallery.

?

Have a good cup of coffee as you appreciate Art at Jackie Chan’s Café at Muse Floor and know that you’re making a difference somewhere.

Text of speech by Tan Sri Dr Francis Yeoh

For the Opening of Jackie Chan’s Café

at Muse Floor, Starhill Gallery

27 October 2007

OF COFFEE, ART AND HEART

Good afternoon members of the media, it’s good to see you here again; ladies and gentlemen, friends and fans who have been eagerly awaiting this occasion; and our dear friend Jackie Chan who has taken his time to join us in Kuala Lumpur at MUSE Floor, Starhill Gallery.

All of us here have a great affinity with Jackie Chan for various reasons. As for me personally, I have always told Jackie that his persona as an actor and a great entertainer is so awesome and overwhelming that his values and virtues as a good human being, and a Man with a Good Heart who has devoted so much time and untiring efforts to charitable causes all over the world is often overshadowed, and even less celebrated.

Hence, Jackie, as we are all here today, we wish to acknowledge that you are indeed well-loved not just for the joy, entertainment and humour that you bring to our lives with your profession, but also for the hearts that you have touched around the world, especially of children’s as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, as well as the many charitable endeavours you have championed internationally.

It is no wonder that Jackie Chan is listed by FORBES as the World’s 10 Most Generous Celebrities who include personalities like Angelina Jolie, Steven Spielberg, Sir Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Nicholas Cage and Sandra Bullock.

MUSE Floor at Starhill Gallery is therefore indeed delighted to be home to the first Jackie Chan’s Café in Malaysia, where families, friends and fans can come together to spend some really good quality time appreciating Art over a cup of Coffee; enriching their lives and relationships with the universal language and power of the Arts, and the universal appeal of Coffee.

In furthering Jackie’s good works and good heart, we have also decided that with Jackie Chan’s Café, a certain percentage of revenue will be donated to charity to help disadvantaged children. And the proceeds from today’s “United Buddy Bears” colouring charity campaign will also be matched one-for-one by Jackie Chan and one-for-one by Starhill Gallery towards charity.

So it’s the ideal match with Jackie Chan in the Forbes list of Generous Celebrities to be in Starhill Gallery, also in the Forbes list as one of “Asia’s Most Beautiful Shopping Malls” – bringing an Icon of Charisma into an Icon of Icons in Kuala Lumpur.

MUSE Floor with its “Open Living Art” concept is a Nucleus of Inspiration and Imagination where we are surrounded by awesome works of Art by both Malaysian and international artists. And for its appreciation, coffee is certainly befitting, as Benjamin Franklin, one of the most innovative minds ever in our history says:

“Coffee is one of the most valuable luxuries of the table. It excites cheerfulness without intoxication, a pleasing flow of spirits with its occasion that is never followed by sadness, languor or debility.”

So we certainly hope that at MUSE Floor, cheerfulness and a pleasing flow of joyful spirit will be encouraged and enhanced with a cup of coffee while appreciating the wondrous artistic expressions of human emotions.

Another passionate advocate of coffee is Honoré de Balzac, a prolific French novelist and playwright who believed from his own experience that:

“When coffee is imbibed, ideas begin to move; things remembered arrive at a full gallop; the shafts of wit start up like sharp-shooters; smiles arise; and the paper is inspired with ink...”

Ladies and gentlemen, Jackie and I are very happy to be able to bring you the joys of Art and Coffee with Jackie Chan’s Café at MUSE Floor in celebrating life, and at the same time contribute to society.

Thank you once again and may God bless you.
