Francis Yeoh on Dr Mahathir - The Contrarian

We keep the best till last. My own last duty – although it is no duty but a labour of love – is to introduce YAB Datuk Sri Dr. Mahathir, our beloved Prime Minister who will give the Closing Address. I volunteer to introduce the Prime Minister because it is the easiest of jobs – because he needs very little introduction.

In doing so I am about to introduce you to a man many of you have never met before and don’t know. You may think you do but if you are relying on the media portrayal then I think you will be far off. That is the mythology. Let me tell you a little about the real man that we Malaysians know and love.

Dr. Mahathir is a truly remarkable person. He is the most sensational leader this country has ever known – for his outspoken and very independent, often trenchant views, and often perceived as unorthodox by the West. Here in Malaysia, we think of him as our Renaissance Man responsible for the transformation of this country into a modern Asian nation.

Malaysia is also a beacon of stability, democracy and prosperity in the Islamic World. He would probably describe himself as a Fundamentalist Muslim – true to the fundamental values of his faith, preferring substance to mere form – he has successfully warded off extremism of either the racial or the religious kind whenever it threatened to upset the hard won interracial synthesis in this finely balanced multi ethnic, multi religious society. He has preserved a racial compact that is fair, just and equitable.

He is also a controversial man because he is a true visionary, a rare species of whom it has been said.

“All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find it was all a vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes and make it possible”. Dr. Mahathir has acted his dream for Malaysia, and it is called Vision 2020. The optical association with perfect sight will not have escaped the medical doctor. He possesses an honourable obsession to uplift his country. All of us know what it is to be enthusiastic occasionally. One man may keep the enthusiasm for 30 minutes – another man for 30 days but this man has kept his for 30 years and more.

He is an idealist – was once nicknamed the Redeemer – but a practical idealist – a strategic thinker. Vision is not necessary having a plan but having a mind that always plans.

He is sometimes dubbed a contrarian. I prefer to think of him as brave, in a sense. Dr Mahathir went out to meet the financial crisis of 1997 – and did his own thing, for which he was labelled a heretic. He saved us. We now have one of the best performing economies in the world and he stands vindicated before the world.

That is Dr Mahathir the Prime Minister. What of Dr Mahathir the man? Here the perception gap is widest. He is shy but not timid. He takes on responsibilities that are of the most heavy, but wields power lightly. He is humble but not weak. Those expecting to meet an arrogant dictator, encounter a courteous Malay gentleman.

He shuns the pomp and circumstance of the office and would just as soon eat at the stalls as at some sumptuous banquet. Likewise he refuses often, to the despair of the PROs to court the cult of personality, of Public Relations, or of the popularity chase. He dislikes flattery, prefers to have it told “warts and all”. He is a good husband and father and an exemplary family man.

Particularly now when we are all concerned with the global dilemma. Dilemmas are Dr Mahathir’s specialism. The first book he wrote was the Malay Dilemma. Recently he has been preoccupied with the new Malay Dilemma. He is inured to crisis because it has to be remembered he is a medical doctor by profession – a healer not an iconoclast. His instincts point him in the direction always of human distress, be it in Bosnia or Afghanistan. He espouses the cause of our weakest brethren in the developing world.

For the last few days we have been concentrating on the global issues we face in the aftermath of September 11th. Our medical doctor turned politician can probably shed new light; by the application of his medical training.

We all know that what he advocates in the war on terrorism is to define this new phenomenon precisely, to analyse the root causes of it, be it alienation and despair, then proceed to treat, preferring constructive engagement to conflict.

Most of us I am sure today would like to hear his prognosis for the world. And so Doctor may I invite your verdict.

Ladies and Gentlemen please join me in welcoming Yang Amat Berhormat Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia.
