KL mayor pledges to cycle to work on Earth Hour

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib has pledged to cycle to work if 50 buildings in the city switch off their lights on the night of the ''Earth Hour'' campaign on March 23. Ahmad Phesal said so far 20 buildings in the city had pledged to support the campaign by switching off lights and remain in the dark for one hour from 8.30 pm on March 23. ''If 50 buildings in the city support the Earth Hour campaign I will ride my bicycle to work on Monday (March 25) from my house in Bukit Tunku,'' he told reporters here. He said among iconic buildings in the city that had pledged their support include the Petronas Twin Towers, Telekom's Menara Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and shoppings malls belonging to YTL Corporation in Bukit Bintang. On other developments, Ahmad Phesal said Kuala Lumpur City Hall had developed a new building masterplan to make it compulsory for new buildings, iconic and heritage buildingd to comply to energy saving indoor lighting system. He said the plan will start with Masjid Jamek in Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman by the second quarter of this year, adding that most street lights in the city would also be changed to energy saving led bulbs.- BERNAMA
