Oriental Bank building to reopen as Moxy Kuala Lumpur Chinatown by YTL

NST, Dec 5, 2024

The historic Oriental Bank building on Jalan Hang Lekiu, Kuala Lumpur, is undergoing a transformation into a world-class hotel, with an investment of RM75 million.

The Art Deco-style structure, which includes podium levels and two basement floors, will be reimagined as a 21-storey hotel featuring 320 rooms and a swimming pool.

Datuk Mark Yeoh, chairman of YTL Hotels, said that the revamped property, named Moxy Kuala Lumpur Chinatown, is scheduled to open in the first quarter of next year.

"We chose this brand for its distinct appeal, offering a unique experience in Chinatown and Kuala Lumpur. Bringing Moxy to the market excites us, as it is one of Marriott International's most dynamic global brands, set to redefine hospitality in Kuala Lumpur," Yeoh told Business Times.

The hotel will feature functional rooms and a rooftop bar with sweeping views of KL Tower and KL118.

Yeoh also shared updates on another project, namely the RM55 million renovation and refurbishment of Syuen Hotel in Ipoh, Perak.

The property was acquired by YTL Real Estate Investment Trust (YTL REIT) from Syuen Hotel Bhd for RM55 million.

The 11-storey, four-star hotel with 291 rooms ceased operations in May 2020.

Pintar Projek Sdn Bhd, the Manager for YTL REIT, has appointed Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of YTL Corporation Berhad, to carry out renovation works on the property.

Once reopened, the property will operate under the AC Hotels by Marriott brand and is slated to debut in the first quarter of next year, Yeoh said.

Renovations include replacing furniture, fixtures, and finishes in rooms and common areas; repainting the building with a new facade; and upgrading event, swimming, and sports facilities to meet Marriott's brand standards.

"This will be the fourth AC Hotel under YTL Hotels. Our aim is to establish the AC brand in every major Malaysian city, leveraging our master franchise for the entire country," said Yeoh.

He noted the brand's versatility in catering to both four-star and five-star markets, making it ideal for various locations.

The revamped hotel will feature a chairman suite, three presidential suites, two ballrooms, and 15 meeting rooms.

"This hotel will be a game-changer for Ipoh, becoming the city's first international chain hotel and a significant addition to its hospitality landscape," Yeoh added.
