YTL's Hotel Stripes Celebrates Grand Opening With Street Party For The Neighbourhood
YTL Hotels launches second Autograph Collection Hotel in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, February 18, 2017
YTL Hotels celebrated another milestone with the official opening of Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection. The much anticipated opening was officiated by Tan Sri Dato' (Dr) Francis Yeoh, Managing Director of YTL Corporation and Mr Raj Menon, Chief Operating Officer - Asia-Pacific, Marriott International. It was a momentous evening as the hotel hosted an exclusive and vibrant street party attended by VIPs, guests from corporate Malaysia, society’s top influencers and members of the media.
The auspicious event was launched with the unveiling of the Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur signage by Tan Sri Francis Yeoh, Dato' Mark Yeoh and Raj Menon. Guests were treated to a lively lion dance performance and a glorious display of fireworks which lit up the night sky beautifully.
Tan Sri Francis Yeoh in his speech said, "We are very proud to continuously create significant global milestones in our expanding hotels portfolio which currently features 30 properties across three major continents - Europe, Australia and Asia. YTL Hotels is the proud owner of the largest collection of Marriott International properties in Asia-Pacific and we are looking forward to grow further with the world’s largest hotel company."
Speaking at the launch, Mr Menon lauded the YTL Family's trust in Marriott International and their unwavering support for the brand.
"Their support has resulted in a strong partnership between us, with a growing portfolio of beautiful and award-winning properties in Malaysia and beyond. Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur is a truly exceptional hotel with luxury service and amenities, unique design which reflects the history and character of the neighbourhood and carefully crafted experiences curated based on its locale – perfect for the global traveller seeking a conceptually innovative and unforgettable travel experience," stated Menon.
Award winning and multi-hit band Shakatak was flown in all the way from the UK to entertain while guests savoured dinner which featured delectable local neighbourhood creations and international cuisine. The evening included a pivotal moment where nine Neighhourhood Friends were recognised for the unique businesses that they own and operate in the Jalan Kamunting area and for extending a very warm and generous welcome to the hotel. Each Friend was presented with a red brick as a token of the hotel’s appreciation for their presence.
Jalan Kamunting is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Kuala Lumpur. YTL Corporation’s very first office was built on the piece of land that the hotel stands. With its individual characteristics of the neighbourhood where 1940s shophouses and decades-old family-owned businesses such as Yut Kee and Ah Loke Tailor still stand, it was a choice location to develop Stripes.
Back in the day, Jalan Kamunting was a main settlement for tin mining during the colonial era. At the end of the 19th century, most of the neighbourhood’s buildings which had been constructed from wood and thatch were replaced with bricks and tiles as stipulated by the British colonial administration. This resulted in the area’s distinct eclectic shophouse architecture many with five foot ways, pedestrian walkways unique to the region. The hotel is designed to showcase the local heritage with a touch of modernity whilst complementing the iconic buildings in the vicinity.
The long-standing and valued relationship YTL Hotels has with Marriott International has played a prominent role in elevating YTL Hotels’ global presence in the hospitality industry. The group had recently acquired Threadneedles Hotel in central London, making it their second Autograph Collection hotel in the UK. With 11 Marriott International luxury properties in its portfolio of 30 worldwide and the affiliation with these distinguished brands, there is no doubt that it has complete trust in Marriott International who will take the group to even greater heights in the years to come. YTL Hotels continues to strive to deliver Malaysian hospitality with global standards in each location that they reside. Its brand promise of ‘We don’t just build properties. We craft inspired experiences.’ is demonstrated with passion in all its hotels and resorts in Malaysia and beyond.
The chic and stylish Stripes is the second Autograph Collection hotel in Malaysia – the first being The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, a YTL Classic Hotel. Stripes exudes a distinctive urban vibe and draws inspiration from the history and heartbeat of its local neighbourhood. The hotel offers a different perspective on the local scene mixed with edge and adventure that appeals to travellers seeking opportunities to experience conceptually innovative and unforgettable travel experiences.
Housing 184 bespoke guest rooms and suites, the hotel is a unique blend of contemporary design and urban chic, reflecting the history and character of the neighbourhood. Brasserie 25, the French-style restaurant showcasing flavourful laid back cuisine, exudes a rustic charm with its red brick arcades, mid-century copper sputnik chandeliers and dark wood floors. In the afternoons, it offers Le Goûter, afternoon tea with a French twist.
Cosy with stripped-back walls giving it an industrial edge, The Snug is a great pit-stop for a quick caffeine fix to start the day. Man Tao, the rooftop pool bar with a stunning view of KL Tower, is a trendy spot for soothing tunes and evening drinks accompanied by a captivating sunset.
Six meeting studios offer stylish and creative spaces for both business and social events for up to 80 persons. A rooftop pool overlooking Kuala Lumpur’s skyline is the prime spot for those looking to cool down on a hot day or just simply relax with a refreshing beverage. The hotel is also equipped with a comprehensive and modern 24-hour gym.
